Which pre-workout suits your training?
Not every pre-workout is the same. The biggest difference comes down to one ingredient: caffeine. Beyond that, formulas differ in what else they contain, such as citrulline, beta-alanine or glycerol. Below you can read how the products in this collection differ. That way you choose based on the label, not on promises.

With caffeine: Evogen EVP-Xtreme N.O.
EVP-Xtreme N.O. is Evogen's pre-workout with caffeine: 200 mg per scoop, of which 150 mg from green coffee beans and 50 mg from dicaffeine malate. The label also allows two scoops; that makes 400 mg. It also contains, per scoop, 3,000 mg L-citrulline, 1,600 mg beta-alanine and 1,250 mg creatine monohydrate. Drinking coffee or energy drinks the same day? Count those too.
Without caffeine: Evogen EVP-3D
EVP-3D is stimulant-free: it contains no caffeine. EVP-3D also contains 3,000 mg L-citrulline, 1,600 mg beta-alanine and 1,250 mg creatine monohydrate per scoop. A logical choice if you train in the evening, are sensitive to caffeine or want to combine your pre-workout with another product.
Glycerol: EVP AQ and EVP AQ Shot
Glycerol is a substance that binds water. It's a standard ingredient in pump formulas. EVP AQ is liquid: a serving of two tablespoons contains 20 grams of vegetable glycerol and 2.5 grams of betaine. No caffeine is listed on the label. Each serving of EVP AQ also contains 250 mg of vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to maintain the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise. The EVP AQ Shot is a ready-to-drink 59 ml shot with 10 grams of glycerol and 2.5 grams of betaine. This label also lists no caffeine.
Ready to drink: EVP Xtreme AQ RTD
No shaker at hand? The EVP Xtreme AQ RTD is a ready-to-drink pre-workout, 12 per box. Per bottle (355 ml): 200 mg caffeine (150 mg from green coffee, 50 mg from dicaffeine malate), 6 grams of L-citrulline, 3.2 grams of beta-alanine and 10 grams of glycerol. Don't drink more than one bottle a day.
RAW Nutrition: BUM Thavage
Thavage is the pre-workout from RAW Nutrition, the brand developed together with Chris Bumstead. Per scoop: 130 mg caffeine plus 32 mg dicaffeine malate (a second caffeine source), 3 grams of L-citrulline, 1.6 grams of beta-alanine and 1.25 grams of betaine. Christopher's Secret Stuff is the same formula in a different flavour.
What's in a pre-workout?
- Caffeine: the best-known stimulant in pre-workouts.
- Citrulline: an amino acid, often as citrulline malate. Found in most pump formulas.
- Beta-alanine: an amino acid. Many people feel a tingling on the skin. It's a well-known effect that usually fades within a short time.
- Glycerol: binds water, often added to pump formulas.
How to use a pre-workout
Always follow the dosage on the label and never take more than it states. Just starting out? Begin with a caffeine-free option, or with the starting dose on the label. Do you have a medical condition, take medication, or are you pregnant or breastfeeding? Consult your doctor first. For reference: the European Food Safety Authority EFSA sees no safety concerns for healthy adults with a single dose of up to 200 mg of caffeine and up to 400 mg per day, from all sources combined.
