FST-7 Tip of the Week: How to Effectively Resolve Muscle Imbalances

Creating a perfectly symmetrical and balanced physique is the ultimate test in elite sports. In performances and bodybuilding competitions, it is critically important that both sides of the body are equally large and full. Lagging body parts or asymmetry disrupt your visual line and immediately cost you valuable points on the judges’ scorecards.

In this FST-7 Tip of the Week, Hany Rambod, the legendary 24-time Olympia-winning coach, explains how he physiologically addresses muscle imbalances. Together with IFBB Pro Andrei Deiu, he demonstrates the exact biomechanical techniques to effectively bring a weaker side up to speed. After an injury, Andrei experienced atrophy (muscle loss) in his right biceps, leading to a clear asymmetry. Rambod uses three specific principles to eliminate such imbalances:

1. The Tactile Tap Technique for Maximum Mind-Muscle Connection

One of the oldest and most effective methods of The Pro Creator is the tap technique. During Andrei’s sets, Rambod continuously taps the muscle groups on the weaker right side—whether it’s the chest, back, shoulder, or biceps. While other trainers dismissed this decades ago, this technique is physiologically invaluable.

By physically touching the weaker muscle during contraction (tactile stimulation), the mechanoreceptors in the skin and muscle wall are activated. This sends a direct signal to the central nervous system, causing your brain to become much more aware of controlling the weaker side. The result is a drastically improved mind-muscle connection and more efficient recruitment of muscle fibers in the lagging body part.

2. Unilateral Overload: Extra Sets and Repetitions

When you train with a barbell or fixed machines, the strong side unconsciously compensates for the weaker side. To break this, you need to switch to unilateral exercises, such as the incline Hammer Strength press.

Rambod applies additional Time Under Tension (TUT) here on the lagging side through two physiological levers:

  • Extra Repetitions: At the end of a regular set, he forces the athlete to push out a number of extra repetitions with only the weaker arm or side until muscle failure.
  • Extra Sets: Sometimes he adds complete extra isolation sets at the end of the exercise that are performed exclusively by the weaker side. This extra training volume forces the lagging muscle to accelerate hypertrophy to catch up.

3. Targeted Prevention and Joint Stability

A muscle imbalance rarely occurs alone; often there is an underlying biomechanical issue or a previous injury. For example, if you notice that your chest or shoulder lags on one side, this can be caused by a weak or unstable shoulder blade.

Rambod emphasizes the importance of specific exercises to physiologically strengthen the rotator cuff (the shoulder rotator cuff). Ensure a thorough, specific warm-up of these stabilizing muscles. This creates the necessary joint stability, allowing you to safely lift heavier weights without the stronger side taking over or causing physiological injury.

The Evogen Strategy to Break Through Neurological Deficits

Resolving a muscle imbalance is physiologically a challenging task for your nervous system because you need to reprogram existing movement patterns. Hany Rambod strategically uses the elite sports formulas of Evogen Nutrition to biochemically accelerate this process:

  • Pre-Workout Neurological Activation: To maximize nerve impulses to the lagging muscle, take Evogen EVP Xtreme/ 3D. beforehand. This activates your central nervous system for razor-sharp focus. Combine this with the liquid Evogen EVP AQ (liquid glycerol); the extreme cell hydration and increased osmotic pressure that result improve nerve impulse conduction, allowing you to physiologically contract the weaker side much more powerfully.

  • Intra-Workout Amino Acid Supply: Unilateral training and extra sets demand a lot from the local nitrogen balance in the lagging muscle. Drink Evogen Amino K.E.M. during your workout to continuously saturate muscle cells with all 9 essential amino acids (EAAs). This keeps anabolic signaling at the cellular level high and prevents acute muscle breakdown during intense isolation runs.

  • Post-Workout Hypertrophy Trigger: Rebuild asymmetric muscle fibers immediately after training with Evogen IsoJect. This ultra-pure whey isolate uses patented IGNITOR™ enzyme technology to rapidly release amino acids into the bloodstream. This ensures that the building blocks are transported directly to the damaged, weaker muscle group for acute recovery and growth.
